Bangalore: Lawrence Fernandes, brother of former Defence Minister and National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convenor, George Fernandes, died at a hospital here yesterday (Nov 14, 2005), family sources said.

Fernandes (74), a bachelor, complained of severe back ache and breathlessness and died following burst of aorta, causing the heart to cease functioning, his brother and labour leader Michael Fernandes said.

Fernandes, who was jailed during the Emergency for nearly nine months, was a Mayor of Bangalore city corporation. In recent years, he was engaged in social work among tribals.

The funeral will take place on Thursday (Nov 17, 2005).
