Bhardwaj declines comment on contempt application
Wednesday, November 16 2005 16:13 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Union Law Minister H R Bhardwaj today (Nov 16, 2005) declined to comment on an application filed in the Supreme Court seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against him for his reported remarks that the judiciary, including the apex court, was responsible for the poor image of civil liberties.

"No comment, leave me alone. Enough is enough," Bhardwaj said when reporters asked him about the application on the sidelines of a programme organized by the Press Council of India to mark National Press Day.

However, addressing the programme, the Law Minister said, "All my life I have fought for civil liberties.

"The press has already reported about what something I said on civil liberties," he said referring to his controversial remarks.

Advocate Ajay Agarwal had sought initiation of suo motu contempt proceedings against Bhardwaj contending that his remarks, widely reported in the electronic and print media, had 'undermined the majesty' of the Supreme Court.

The application had sought that the Attorney General should assist the court in this regard.
