Winding up its two-day visit to the flood-hit districts of Tamil Nadu, the Central team today (Nov 20,2005) said it would submit its report to the Center recommending relief in the next one week to ten days.
After an hour-long discussions with top State Government officials, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, D S Mishra, who headed the nine-member team, told
reporters that certain norms and guidelines had already been laid down by the Central Government for giving assistance.
"There are high level officials' committee and a ministerial level committee which will finalise the final quantum of assistance for all State Governments and union territories, affected by natural calamities," he said.
Mishra complimented the state government for having done its utmost to mitigate the sufferings of the people affected by the floods, especially in Srirangam nearTiruchirappalli.
The State Government had today submitted long-term plans for water management in Cauvery delta and in the city.
"These plans will be included as annexure in our report," he said.
Split into three sub-groups, the team had visited all the flood-affected areas like Cuddalore, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam besides Chennai and neighboring districts during its two-day field visits on November 18 and 19.
On arrival on November 17, the team had extensive discussions with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at the secretariat when she sought a central assistance of Rs.1742
crore, revising the earlier demand for Rs.1120 crore, from the National Calamity Contingency Fund (NCCF).
