Govt contemplating to replace the Indian Police Act
Friday, November 25 2005 10:42 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: To enable the police to tackle futuristic trends of organised crimes including cyber crimes, the Government is working on bringing a new Police Act, the Rajya Sabha was informed.

The new Act, replacing the current one, would take into consideration the technological advantages in the hands of criminals and incorporate functional improvement in core areas of policing by increased investment, better training and capacity building, Minister of States for Home Affairs Sriprakash Jaiswal said in the Upper House yesterday(Nov 25,2005).

There is a need for new Act keeping in view of the new challenges before the police. More so due to the growth and spread of insurgency, militancy and naxalism, he said.

The proposed Act would try and bring attitudinal changes of police including working methodology, to elicit cooperation and assistance of the community rather than its distrust, he said.

The Committee, constituted on September 20, 2005, will take into consideration the recommendations of the National Police Commission and the views of the State Governments, he said.
