PCC to rally at Baharampur; Atish to face action Sunday, November 27 2005 17:40 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
The much-hyped executive meeting of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) today (Nov 27,2005) failed to decide on any strident movement against the arrest of party MP from Baharampur Adhir Chowdhury, but PCC president Pranab Mukherjee indicated that action was likely to be taken against Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Atish Sinha, for his refusal to join the campaigns.
''There are some procedural matters. We will consider them,'' Mukherjee told newsmen after the meeting when asked whether action will be taken against Sinha for his open
announcement dissociating himself from any movement by the party against the arrest of Chowdhury.
Sinha, who remained absent at today's meeting, had recently told newsmen that he would not be part of any movement by the Congress against the arrest.
Chowdhury, also party's Murshidabad unit president, is said to be close to Mukherjee.
According to party sources, the meeting became stormy when supporters of the Union Minister Priya Ranjan Das Munshi and former PCC chief Somen Mitra got into a war of
words over the programme to be taken against the arrest.
While Das Munshi proposed a 'March to the secretariat' programme, Mitra suggested that a statewide 'bandh' be organized instead, the sources said.
Admitting that the meeting was stormy, Mukherjee said, ''We received many proposals. Those will be studied.''
