CBI clears doubts; no move to make Salem approver Tuesday, November 29 2005 15:22 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Putting all speculation to rest, CBI today (Nov 29, 2005) said there was no move to make extradited underworld don and main accused in 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case Abu Salem an approver.
"There is no confusion and there should be no confusion over this. I do not know from where the rumours started about him turning an approver. He is a main accused," CBI Director U S Misra told reporters after inaugurating the DNA laboratory at the CBI headquarters here.
Asked specifically that whether the CBI would consider Salem turning an approver, the CBI Director said in categoric terms 'no.'
About the confessional statement made by the underworld don and whether the agency was contemplating to take any further action on this, Misra said, "About his confessional statement, I will not like to divulge anything as the concerned court has asked the CBI not to reveal anything about the case."
"All I can say is that the investigations is going in the right direction," he said.
Asked about the allegation made by Salem's girlfriend and little-known Bollywood actress Monica Bedi that she was in illegal confinement of the underworld don, the CBI Director said, "The matter is being investigated."
