Need for concerted approach to tackle naxalism: Govt Tuesday, November 29 2005 14:27 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Government today (Nov 29, 2005) said it was not able to completely stop naxalite activities in various parts of the country but assured the Lok Sabha that all cooperation would be extended to state governments to tackle the menace.
"We have been quite successful in controlling terrorism in states like Jammu and Kashmir and in the North-East. As far naxalism is concerned, we have not achieved similar results", Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil said during Question Hour.
The Centre had given 26,000 men and police officials to states besides providing Rs 3,000 crore for modernising the police, he said adding there was need for a concerted approach and a joint action with neighbouring states.
Patil said government was working on political, security and developmental fronts and providing assistance to affected states to enhance their capabilities to deal with the problem.
A draft Standard Operating Procedure had been prepared to institutionalise inter-state joint operations against naxalism, he said adding the Centre had asked states to ensure more focused, sustained and intensified intelligence driven operations against naxalites and their infrastructure.
He said there was 'a grain of truth' in reports that terrorist outfits in the country and abroad were joining hands to carry out their activities.
