Govt sets up committee to draft new Police Act

New Delhi: The government has set up a committee to draft a new Police Act replacing the old one of 1861, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal told the Lok Sabha today (Nov 29, 2005).

The Committee comprises of former Attorney General of India Soli Sorabji, former Secretary to Government of India N C Saxena, Director National Judicial Academy Bhopal N R Madhav Meon, former Director General of BSF Ajay Raj Sharma, Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development, New Delhi, Joint Secretaries (Police Modernisation and Police) and Director SVP NPA, Hyderabad, he said.

Jaiswal said the terms and references of the Committee are to examine the model Police Act prepared by National Police Commission and other draft model Police Acts and suggest modifications as per the changing role/responsibility of police in view of the challenges before it, especially growth and spread of insurgency /militancy/naxalism, etc.

He said the committee of experts has been asked to submit its report in six months time and added that after the draft Act is received by the Government and duly considered further action on it shall take place.
