Mumbai: Superstar Amitabh Bachchan yesterday night (Nov 30, 2005) underwent a successful surgery for infection, inflammation and perforation in his small and large intestines at Leelavati hospital here, sources said.

The 63-year-old actor was in intensive care unit and his condition is stable after the nearly three-hour operation by gastro intestine surgeon Dr P Jagganath of Leelavati Hospital.

A team of surgeons also removed some of the old tissues, which were the remnants of the near-fatal injury the actor had sustained during the shooting of film 'Coolie' in Bangalore in 1982, they said. Film producer Manoj Desai said Amitabh was out of danger after the operation. "We are thankful to God as Amitabh's operation was successful and we pray that he should return home soon".

Bachchan's family members, including his wife Jaya and actor son Abhishek, were also present at the hospital.

Amitabh Bachchan was admitted to Escorts Hospital in New Delhi on November 28 following complaint of abdominal pain and was brought to Leelavati Hospital at night on the same day.

He was subjected to a series of test both at Escorts and Leelavati before being operated for intestinal problems.

As news of the actor's surgery spread, a galaxy of Bollywood and corporate honchos came to Leelavati hospital to enquire about his health. Among them were actors Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt, filmmaker Yash Chopra, industrialist Anil Ambani, Sahara group chairman Subroto Roy, noted aviator Vijaypat Singhania and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

As the doctors performed the surgery, several fans of the 'Shahenshah' of Bollywood waited anxiously outside the hospital and prayed for his recovery.
