Coimbatore on alert for Babri demolition anniversary Sunday, December 4 2005 18:53 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Security has been beefed up in communally sensitive Coimbatore district, in view of the 13th anniversary of the demolition of Babri-Masjid, falling on December six.
Police said 3,200 security personnel, drawn from the city police, armed reserve and Tamil Nadu Special police, have been pressed into service, to meet any eventuality.
Similarly over 2,000 personnel have been deployed in important towns in the district, including Mettupalayam, Tirupur and Pollachi, they said.
Pickets have been erected on arterial roads, strategic points and also communally sensitive areas. Additional security, in the form of armed guards, are maintaining vigil at all important places of worships.
Vehicle checks and night patrolling would be intensified from this evening, they said.
Railway Protection force and other security personnel are maintaining vigil at the Coimbatore Railway station and monitoring railway tracks in the district. The railways have stopped booking parcels from last night and would resume only on the morning of Dec eight, railway sources said.
The workers of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhakam have announced a demonstration, by laying siege to the district Collectorate, on that day, to mark their protest over the demolition.
