Police said over 1600 volunteers of the Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) and Tamil Nadu Muslim Thouheed Jamaath were taken into custody in Coimbatore and Ramanathapuram districts for holding demonstrations, defying prohibitory orders.

In the city, a TMMK demonstration was led by its general secretary Haider Ali.

Southern Railway Divisional Manager G Narayanan told newsmen here that all passengers were thoroughly frisked at the railway stations.

A Coimbatore report said over 1,300 volunteers, belonging to TMMK and Jamaat held demonstrations in the district condemning the Babri Masjid demolition and demanding that it be built in the same place.

Later, TMMK state secretary T Ansari told newsmen that the inordinate delay in the trial in the related cases was causing unrest among the Muslim Community.

He appealed to the UPA Government to take steps to build a Mosque at the original site, as promised by the then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, the report said.

Reports reaching here said demonstrations were also held in Madurai, Dindigul, Tuticorin, Theni, Nilgiris and Tiruchirapalli districts of the state.
