TN: More rains forecast due to feeble low pressure Monday, December 12 2005 15:35 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Chennai:
More rains have been forecast for Tamil Nadu during the next two-days due to the presence of a feeble trough of low pressure over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Under the influence of this new system, most places over coastal Tamil Nadu, including the metropolis and Pondicherry are likely to have rains in the next 48-hours beginning at 8.30 AM this morning, the weather office said.
The coastal districts of the state had escaped the fury of Cyclone 'Fanoos' as it had weakened into a depression before crossing Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam on Saturday. Under its influence some parts received moderate to heavy rain yesterday before the system dissipated.
Meanwhile, many parts of the state, particularly Dindigul, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari, Cuddalore and the city have been experiencing intermittent rains since last night (Dec 11, 2005).
Many of the lakes and rivers were on the verge of overflowing.
Ambasamudram in Tirunelveli districts recorded 12 cms of rainfall during the last 24-hours ending at 8.30 AM.
A Theni report said 13 check dams in the forest areas of Theni and Dindigul districts had been affected due to breaches.
One person was injured at Varushanadu early today following a house collapse and landslips have been reported on the Kodaikanal-Palani Ghat Road. There was no bus access to seven villages where 10,000 people lived.
The Vaigai dam level reached 69.26ft (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 4932 cusecs. Discharge from the dam was 8000 cusecs. A flood alert has been issued, authorities said.
