Chennai: 29 killed in a stampede at a relief camp

Chennai: At least 29 persons were killed and 20 injured in a stampede at a relief camp in city's K K Nagar area today (Dec 18,2005) morning, police said.

The incident occurred at a camp set up near a Government school premises here where a large number of people had gathered to collect materials.

People started scurrying away for safety when a heavy downpour started suddenly, leading to a stampede.

Senior police officers and fire services have rushed to the spot.

The injured were hospitalized.

This is the second such incident in the city. In the first incident on November 6, six persons were killed and 20 injured near a relief camp in North Chennai.
