DPA take out silent march to mourn stampede death

Chennai: Hundreds of volunteers of Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) in Tamil Nadu today (Dec 19, 2005) held a silent procession here to mourn the death of 42 people in a stampede at a flood relief centre here.

The procession led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M K Stalin also protested the 'improper' distribution of relief to those affected by rains.

Leaders of Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India Marxist (CPI-M), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) and PMK also participated in the silent procession, which commenced from Monroe statue and culminated near the Chepauk guest house, covering nearly two kilometers.

Fourty-two people, including 23 women, were killed and 37 injured yesterday in the stampede at a corporation school where hundreds had lined up in the wee hours to collect flood relief coupons.
