Elders flay 'police high-handedness' in Meerut Wednesday, December 21 2005 16:46 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Terming 'Operation Majnu' as a sign of 'sick' police mind, members in the Rajya Sabha today (Dec 21, 2005) flayed what they called 'police high-handedness' on teenagers in Cantonment Park in Meerut.
Demanding that police officials, including women personnel, responsible for carrying out physical attack on young students should be identified and punished, the members said this trend indicated the country's slide away from civilisation.
The matter was raised by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj who said if it was an instance of eve teasing, why were the girls beaten up.
She found support from all sections of the House.
Mohsina Kidwai (Cong) said it was a 'blot' on the entire civilised society.
Alleging there was a 'jungle raj' in Uttar Pradesh, she said the 'operation' was very harmful for the coming generation.
Home Minister Shivraj Patil said he would collect information and apprise the House about the incident.
