Parliament bomb scare: Police seize hard disks in TN Wednesday, December 21 2005 18:04 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Madurai (TN) :
The police team, probing the E-mail bomb threat to Parliament, have seized 25 hard disks from the two internet browsing centres at Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli, from where the message was sent, police sources said.
The team left for Delhi last night with the disks, the sources told sources, adding some floppies were also seized.
The sources said teams from the cyber crime branch of the Tamil Nadu police and their Delhi counterparts had conducted a thorough search of the broad-band net-cafe at Murugankurichi on the Palyamkottai-Thiruvanathapuram road and Nellai Online in Palyamkootai.
"We are having an open mind while investigating the case. We continue to get clues and information. But so far we could not succeed in getting the exact identity of the criminal who sent the E-mail. Computer pictures, generated with the help of description of visitors (to the centres) also did not give a proper lead. We need more leads," the sources said.
Asked why the disks were being taken to Delhi, they said the disks would help them analyse the E-mails sent to various addressees.
A cyber-crime team from Chennai, led by Assistant Commissioner Jayalakshmi left for Chennai last evening, the sources said.
The Delhi team interrogated two persons, Kabir and Mubarak, and owners of the net-cafe before leaving for the capital last night, the sources said.
While the owners had been let off, Kabir and Mubarak were still being questioned, the sources said.
Of 11 persons detained for interrogation, nine had been released, the sources said.
Among those questioned was a lecturer of the Tirunelveli city college and a non-teaching staff.
"The E-mail threat is being probed from several angles and the information is being sorted out," the sources said.
The sources said due to the language problem, the Tamil Nadu police were assisting their Delhi counterparts. "There were some misunderstanding during the investigation due to the language problem but it was sorted out then and there," the sources said.
Initially, a Police team from Delhi, including Mohan Sharma and Mohan Chandlal joined the Tamil Nadu CB-CID DSP Balu, Jayalakshmi (Cyber crime investigation specialist) who were probing the case. Delhi Assistant Commissioner (Intelligence) Sanjeev Yadav also joined the team on Dec 19.
Both houses of Parliament were abruptly adjourned on Friday last after receiving the threat and after a thorough search of House the threat was declared a hoax.
