Meerut incident: UP orders probe after public outcry Friday, December 23 2005 09:39 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Meerut (Lucknow):
In a damage-control exercise, the Uttar Pradesh Government yesterday (Dec 22, 2005) ordered a probe by a DIG into the beating up of young couples by police in a Meerut public park as Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav promised stern action against errant officials.
The Government also decided to conduct administrative inquiry to 'fix responsibility' on the officials involved in 'Operation Majnu' which triggered a nationwide outcry over
moral policing.
"I admit the mistake committed by the police. I am totally with the young couples. Action has been initiated against some police officials connected in this matter," Yadav told reporters in Delhi.
All policemen found guilty of misbehaving with the young couples would be dealt with strongly, he said.
"A DIG level inquiry has already been ordered but the state government would conduct another high level administrative inquiry," Principal Secretary, Home, Alok Sinha told reporters in Lucknow.
Meerut Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police R K Vishwakarma has been asked to inquire into the 'whole affair' that occurred on Monday in the public park when young couples were caught on camera being beaten up and shoved around by policewomen.
Four police officials involved in the operation were suspended but Sinha denied reports that SSP Meerut has been suspended following the incident. "He is on two days leave for some personal work," he added.
Meanwhile, Amit Sharma and his friend, reported missing since they were shown on television being beaten by police, yesterday returned to their homes safely.
