MP cash scam: Jethmalani opposes expulsion of 11 MPs Saturday, December 24 2005 18:58 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Mumbai:
Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani today (Dec 24, 2005) opposed the expulsion of 11 MPs from the Parliament after they were caught on camera accepting bribes for raising questions in the House.
"What more can I say when they have been expelled. I oppose their expulsion," he said on the sidelines of the International Sindhi Trade Show here.
On the basis of the reports submitted by the Ethics Committee, the Parliament expelled 11 MPs, comprising six members of BJP, three of BSP and one each of Congress and RJD yesterday, who were caught on camera in a query scam under a sting operation of a private news channel.
To a question on the procedure followed for the expulsion, the former Law Minister said, "Nothing could be said if they opine in the House that questions of law be kept aside and the prestige of the House should be given priority," in an indirect reference to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee's statements that "it was not a question of legality."
When asked what according to him was more important between legality and credibility of the House, Jethmalani said that a balance of both should be considered.
