Delhi Govt orders probe into shopping mall collapse Sunday, December 25 2005 18:31 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The Delhi Government today (Dec 25,2005) ordered an inquiry into yesterday (Dec 24, 2005) evening's shopping mall collapse in Jasola village of South Delhi in which at least eleven construction workers have died.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit also announced an ex gratia of Rs 100,000 each to the families of the dead workers, Rs 50,000 to each of the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for
those who suffered minor injuries.
Meanwhile, police arrested two building contractors in connection with the deadly collapse.
S K Khattar and Arun Khanduja, managing partners of New Age Builders, were contracted for building the Jasola shopping mall where earth caved in yesterday (Dec 24,2005), trapping at least 17 people 50 feet underground.
Rescuers have pulled out eleven bodies and are on the job at the scene where five more people are still feared trapped.
The site owners, India Colonisers Private Limited, also announced a Rs 150,000-compensation and employment for each family bereaved in the accident.
In a statement, the company said it would ensure full relief and rehabilitation for the stricken families.
Delhi Industries Minister Mangat Ram Singhal and Divisional Commissioner G K Marwah also visted the scene.
In a separate statement, the Communist Party of India (CPI) Marxist (M) demanded regular inspections by Government officials at construction sites.
The Left party said the collapse was an example of 'blatant violation' of safety norms and labour laws at Delhi's construction sites. A party delegation led by its leader Brinda Karat also visited the scene.
