India should cautiously watch Lankan situation: CPI Monday, December 26 2005 15:12 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Coimbatore:
India should keep a close watch on the recent political developments in neighbouring Sri Lanka where the continuation of ceasefire and peace talks has become 'quite necessary', Communist Party of India (CPI) National Secretary, D Raja said today (Dec 26,2005).
The 'disturbing developments' including the killing of Tamil legislator, Joseph Pararanasingham yesterday (Dec 25,2005), would have an 'impact' on India and the Government should tread cautiously by properly assessing the situation, Raja told
reporters here.
Asserting that CPI wanted the ceasefire and peace talks to continue for solving the rebel problem in Sri Lanka, Raja also said that Tamils should seek peaceful co-existence with
Singhalese.
He termed the killing of Joseph as 'gruesome' and said it should be condemned by all.
"These happenings should not lead to escalation of violence in Sri Lanka, where there was peace and ceasefire for the last three years", Raja said adding that India should help
in finding a long lasting solution there.
Referring to India's policy in Nepal affairs, he said the country should pursue an independent Foreign Policy and should not do any thing, which would create an impression of legitimising King's action in the country.
On the Government's stand in Iran issue, he wanted the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) leadership not to bow to the 'dictates' of the United States.
