Police constable killed in mob violence in Kolkata Tuesday, December 27 2005 17:45 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Mob violence claimed a constable's life while 14 other policemen were injured during a demolition drive in an encroached area in south Kolkata's Tollygunge area today (Dec 27, 2005).
The mob fought a pitched battle with the police who were assisting the civic authorities in demolishing illegal shanties and structures near the Tollygunge railway station, the police said.
The police made a lathi-charge after fifteen policemen were injured in brickbatting by the mob.
Constable S Khan who was among the injured was pronounced dead after being rushed to hospital, the police said.
Armed police and Rapid Action Force were deployed in the area. The situation though tense, was now under control.
Police rounded up 20 persons in connection with the violence.
The city police chief and senior police officers were at the spot.
Train services on Eastern Railways' Budge Budge section was suspended because of tension in the area.
