Forensic experts visit mass grave site in Panchmahal
Wednesday, December 28 2005 19:17 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Ahmedabad: A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team from Gandhinagar today (Dec 28, 2005) visited the mass graves in Lunavada village of Panchmahal district where skeletal remains of victims killed in Gujarat riots were unearthed by the victims relatives yesterday (Dec 27, 2005).

"A three-member team from the FSL is camping in Lunawada from the morning and will assist the police in collecting samples of the skeletal remains found at the site," FSL director J M Vyas told sources.

"The team consists of two assistant directors and a scientific officer," he said adding that the team had visited and inspected the site today.

The FSL team arrived at the site after Gujarat police had decided to conduct DNA tests of the skeletal remains some of which were unearthed by some of the relatives of the riot-victims killed in the nearby Pandarwada village.

Vyas also said that the team would bring the samples to the FSL after which DNA tests would be conducted to establish the identity of the bodies buried in the grave.

The local police also conducted a 'panchnama' at the site today morning.

According to the Director General of Gujarat Police, A K Bhargava, the remains belong to the 21 riot victims of Panderwada massacre who were buried by the local administration after conducting their post-mortems.

However, a CBI team, which has already arrived in Gujarat, is also expected to visit the site to ascertain whether the remains belong to the massacred victims whose bodies were yet to be recovered in the Bilkis Bano case.
