Manipur IGP killed in an ambush by insurgents

Imphal: Manipur Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) T Thangthuam was killed in an ambush by insurgents at Oinam area in Bishenpur district today (Dec 31, 2005), official sources said.

Thangthuam was returning to Imphal from Churachandpur district when his party was waylaid and attacked by heavily armed insurgents at Oinam, about 25 km from here, at around 9.30 am, the sources said.

Police personnel escorting the IGP (Intelligence) returned the fire and a heavy exchange of fire lasted for some time.

Heavy security forces have rushed to the spot.
