WB police identifies CPI (M) leader Kar's assailants Monday, January 2 2006 15:40 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Kolkata:
West Bengal Police have identified some assailants of Communist Party of India (CPI) Marxist (M) Purulia district secretariat member Rabindranath Kar and his wife at Bhomragora as security was beefed up for some other party leaders who are under Maoist
threat, top police officials said today (Jan 2, 2006).
"Some of the assailants have been identified. Efforts are on to nab them," Officer on Special Duty of West Bengal Government's Naxalite cell Chayan Mukherjee told newsmen.
IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said that police have received 'specific clues' about the movement of some Maoist groups in the area.
Stating that no one had yet been arrested, he said that the joint combing operations and inter-district operations (involving the Maoist-infested Purlia, Bankura and West
Midnapore districts) would continue.
To a question, Kanojia admitted that some local leaders in the area were also under Maoist threat, saying their security has been tightened.
"Security has also been beefed up in the vulnerable areas. There are plans to have more
central forces in the area," he said.
DGP Subhas Awasthi yesterday visited the area under Bandwan police station in Purulia district and held talks with district police officials and also the senior police officials
of an adjoining district in Jharkhand.
Kanojia denied that the killing of Rabindranath Kar and his wife Anandamoyee resulted from intelligence failure.
"The incident is unfortunate, but certainly not the result of intelligence failure. We have been able to foil attempts by the Maoists on many earlier occasion," he said.
