J&K: One-way traffic allowed on Srinagar-Jammu NH
Wednesday, January 4 2006 18:17 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Srinagar: A day after clearing all vehicles stranded due to heavy snowfall, authorities today (Jan 4, 2006) allowed one-way traffic on the 300-km Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.

The authorities are monitoring the situation on hourly basis and if weather permits, two-way traffic would be allowed on the highway within a few days, official sources said here.

The traffic from Jammu side was permitted to ply on the arterial road, only surface links to and from Kashmir, this morning after the Border Road Organisation (BRO) cleared the highway of several feet of snow yesterday, making way for stranded vehicles to reach their destinations, sources said.

Heavy snowfall forced the closure of the highway on Sunday. However, BRO pressed into service its men and machines and cleared the road for stranded vehicles yesterday (Jan 3, 2006).

The sources said Jammu-bound vehicles would be allowed to move on the highway from here tomorrow (Jan 5, 2006).

Meanwhile, barring Srinagar-Jammu Jet flight and Srinagar-Delhi Spicejet flight, all other flights to and from Srinagar International Airport operated, the sources said.

The sources said Jet Airways cancelled its Jammu flight and Spicejet flight failed to land here due to poor visibility in the morning.
