Two people were killed and 50 injured when police opened fire on hundreds of angry villagers who attacked an electricity board's office in western Bangladesh in protest over frequent power blackouts and introduction of new charges, officials said today (Jan 05, 2006).
A probe was underway into last night's incident in Kanshat area of Chapainawabgaj district, during which a mob attacked the office of Rural Electrification Board (REB), local officials said, addition the situation was calm but tense today.
Security officials said two people were killed and 50 others were injured when police opened fire to stop them from running over the REB office.
They said local residents were protesting frequent blackouts and recent introduction of some new charges.
Security has been tightened in the area to ward off any new violence.
Many of the injured were being treated in hospitals.
