New Delhi:
With political circles abuzz with fresh charges of phone tapping, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today (Jan 9, 2006) alleged that the conversations of party president were tapped in the past and called for an investigation into this "serious issue" in which all parties have trust.
"This is a serious issue. And it should be investigated. All political parties should sit together and decide on the format of the probe in which all of them believe," party president Rajnath Singh told reporters here.
When specifically asked whether he preferred any particular mode of investigation, Rajnath said, "Any probe which has the trust of all political parties."
Meanwhile, party spokesman Prakash Javadekar said that the telephone of party chief was "tapped". But, he did not specify whether it was former party chief L K Advani or the new incumbent.
"We have received information from different sources that telephones of some senior leaders, including that of our party president have been under surveillance at some point or the other. Their phones have been tapped in the past," Javedekar said.
In Nellore in Andhra Pradesh, party Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu was quoted as saying that the telephone of Advani was tapped during the Volcker controversy.
