Somnath calls all-party meeting on expulsion issue
Tuesday, January 10 2006 19:43 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Kolkata: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today (Jan 10, 2006) said he has convened an all-party meeting in Delhi on January 20 to discuss the situation arising out of Delhi High Court notice to Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, Election Commission and the Centre on the expulsion of MPs.

"Since the court has given notice in the matter, an all-party meeting has been called in New Delhi on January 20 to discuss the situation. I want to discuss the issue with different political party leaders," Chatterjee told sources here.

Maintaining that the courts had no jurisdiction in the matter, Chatterjee said that the meeting was intended to get the views of leaders of different political parties.

"Besides I have also invited some lawyers for their opinion," Chatterjee said.

He said that letters inviting different parties to attend had already been sent and he also had a talk with the Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee who is the leader of the house in Lok Sabha.

The Delhi High Court yesterday issued notices to the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats, Election Commission and the Centre on petitions by eight of the 11 MPs challenging their expulsion in the 'cash for questions' scam.
