TKM workers end sit-in to pave way for discussions Wednesday, January 11 2006 16:14 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Bangalore:
Over 400 workers of the Toyota Kirloskar Motor Employees Union demonstrating in front of the Labour Commissioner's office since January nine, ended their sit-in last evening and have resolved to keep away from the premises to pave way for the conciliator talks between the management and Union scheduled on January 12.
Only the union's elected office bearers and authorised representatives, the CITU leaders, would be present at the premises for the talks, union leaders said.
The decision was taken following a suggestion by the Labour Commissioner that the agitating workers should vacate the premises to pave for the talks, the sources said.
The conciliation meeting earlier scheduled on January nine failed to materialise when the management refused to turn up for the talks stating the atmosphere was tense and not conducive for holding such talks at venue, where over 400 workers had staged a sit-in.
The workers had continued to demonstrate at the office and refused to budge from the place till the management came down for the talks. However, following the suggestion by the Commissioner, the workers ended their sit-in last evening.
Some of the elected members of the Union and CITU met the Labour Commissioner and assured him of their fullest cooperation in finding a solution.
The TKM has announced a lock out on January eight following a snap strike by the union on January six. The workers had struck work to protest the dismissal of three union members which they termed as illegal.
