Saturday, January 14 2006 10:22 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Army chief Gen J J Singh yesterday (Jan 13, 2006) ruled out women being given a combat role in the army but visualised a greater role for them in logistics and other fields.

"We cannot have women exposed to violent battlefield conditions. But definitely more room would be open to them in other fields like support and logistics services," Singh said at a news conference on the eve of the Army Day on January 15.

He announced that Army proposed to set up a Corps of Language and country specialists under the Directorate of Military Intelligence and these positions would be manned by women.
