Imphal:
Normal life has been affected by a 24-hour general strike called by the Joint Action Committee against the killing of M. Indrasen by the underground People's United Liberation Front (PULF) for ransom, official sources said.
The strike which began last evening, will end at 6 p.m. today (Jan 15,2006).
No incidents have been reported, the sources said.
Vehicles were off the roads. Markets, shops and other business establishments were also closed due to the strike.
Indersen was killed by PULF after he was kidnapped from Manipur's Thoubal district on December 21 last. His body was recovered by police on January 2 from Yairi Pok area in the same district.
According to the family members of the deceased, Indersen was killed by PULF militants for failure to pay the demand of Rs. 6 crore to the underground outfit.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) which called the general strike further decided at a meeting on January 10 to ban the PULF on the ground that it was 'a gang of armed looters', according to JAC source.
Several social organisations including women, students, players and human rights activists extended their support to the JAC.
