Kolkata:
Communist Party of India (CPI) Marxist (M) yesterday (Jan 17,2006) demanded that theensuing assembly election in West Bengal should not bedeferred and be held within May 15.
"The assembly poll in the state must be held within May15 ", CPI-M politburo member Anil Biswas said while addressing a meeting of the party's south 24 Parganas district at
Jadavpur here.
The people will not accept if the coming assembly election was deferred in the state, he said.
Biswas's statement assumed significance as the 19 observer of the Election Commission who had visited the state to scrutinse the voters' list, were scheduled to submit their
report to the Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon today (Jan 18,2006).
In an apparent reference to the possibility of the imposition of central rule in the state, Biswas said, "Only once in 1969, they had dared to do it. We don't think they
will dare to do it again".
Referring to the party's poor performance in the district in 2001 assembly poll, Biswas, also the CPI-M state secretary, said it was a shame and this time 'we have to correct it'.
