IAEA rejects US, Europe request for report on Iran Tuesday, January 24 2006 10:04 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Vienna (Austria) :
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency yesterday (Jan 23, 2006) rejected demands by Europe and the United States for a full special report on Iran's nuclear ambition.
Instead, IAEA head Mohamed ElBaradei, in a letter made available to sources, said he would be willing to provide only an 'update brief' on the status of investigations into suspicions Iran might be interested in developing nuclear weapons and on the state of its plans to resumed small-scale uranium enrichment.
France, Britain, the United States and Australia - all supporters of Iran's referral to the UN Security Council - had requested a full report ahead of a February 2 meeting of the IAEA board of governors that will ponder such action.
