Tarun Gogoi hints at truce, if ULFA stops violence Wednesday, January 25 2006 09:48 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday (Jan 24,2006) indicated that if insurgent outfit United Liberation front of Assam (ULFA) stops violence, which has escalated in the run up to the Republic Day, the Government could consider ceasefire.
Asked about the possibility of declaring ceasefire in Assam, the Chief Minister told sources here that "All will have to work sincerely before taking such a step".
Describing as 'unfortunate' the recent spate of violence by ULFA in the run upto the Republic Day in Assam, the Chief Minister said the insurgent group should 'restrain' itself and end all violence.
"It is very necessary to create a congenial atmosphere for holding any talks. Such violence will only send a wrong message," he said.
Gogoi said the Centre's move to hold the next round of talks with the People's Consultative Group was a welcome step.
"We welcome the Government's decision to hold the talks," he said.
He hoped the next round of talks with ULFA-chosen PCG would pave the way for holding a 'direct talks' with the banned outfit.
The Government will hold the second round of talks with the ULFA-chosen PCG on February seven.
"Assamese writer Indira Goswami, who has been mediating between the Centre and ULFA, had said here Monday (Jan 23,2006) that National Security Advisor M K Narayanan had informed her that the talks with PCG would be held on February seven and modalities for parleys will be decided later on," he said.
