Buta resignation is a right decision: Left parties Thursday, January 26 2006 18:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
The Communist Party of India (CPI) Marxist (M) today (Jan 26,2006) said Buta Singh has taken the right step to resign as the Bihar Governor as his continuation was untenable after the recent Supreme Court judgement against him.
Observing that his party had sought Singh's resignation, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said, "His continuation had become untenable after the apex court
judgement. He has taken the right decision".
The major Left party and the CPI had earlier sought a debate on the question of democratic norms regarding the role of Governors during government formation after an election and precautions to check arbitrariness.
"The problem is not solely of Governors having a political background as the majority judgement points out, but about the latitude and scope of the powers of the Governor,"
the CPI(M) had said.
CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan had also said the Left had always been demanding that the role of the Governor should be more clearly defined in the Constitution and in practice.
