Bhutto: Pakistani people getting 'mention' in US Tuesday, January 31 2006 16:51 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Islamabad:
Former Premier Benazir Bhutto has said she has noticed a change in the US' approach towards Pakistan as not only President Pervez Musharraf but also the people of the country were getting a 'mention' in Washington.
"I am happy to see after a long time people of Pakistan are getting a mention here in Washington too," Bhutto told her supporters at a rally in Rockville, Maryland in the US.
The self-exiled former Prime Minister, has often accused the US of supporting Musharraf in the name of war on terror, at the cost of democracy.
Bhutto, who has been served red notice by the Interpol in connection with corruption charges in Pakistan, said she planned to return to Pakistan soon. "I have to go soon. Whether I go on my own or I am forced to go, it does not matter. I have to go," she was quoted by local daily 'Dawn' as saying while referring to the Interpol red notices.
Bhutto also told CNN "I believe I must go back to help Pakistan's democratization process before the next general election," adding "I don't want the moderates squeezed out."
She said while it was a possibility that she would be arrested if she returned to Pakistan, she was not afraid of 'red notices or red permits.'
Referring to Musharraf's interview to 'The Washington Post' published on Sunday, Bhutto reminded the US of the General's remarks that there was no military solution to the threat of terrorism.
"If this is so, why is he creating new threats for Pakistan by using the military in Balochistan?" she said.
Bhutto is soon likely to meet her former rival and deposed Premier Nawaz Sharif, who has just shifted to London after his five-year exile in Jeddah. The two are expected to thrash out a joint strategy for the 2007 polls.
