A P J Kalam will experience simulated earthquake

Manila: With visits to science and technology institutes forming a key component of his current three-nationtour, scientist-President A P J Abdul Kalam will be given an experience of a simulated earthquake when he visits the Philippines Institute of Volcano and Seismological Studies here tomorrow (Feb 5,2006).

He will also be briefed about earthquake simulator and the Philippine earthquake and Tsunami monitoring system although this country had escaped the killer waves that ravaged India and some other countries straddling the Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal more than a year ago.

Kalam has said India can benefit from the experience of the Philippine's experience in studies on volcanic and seismological activities. The Philippines has 52 volcanoes of which 13 are active.

With his repeated stress on rural development to help turn India into a developed nation, Kalam will visit the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) here where he will be given an audio visual presentation on IRRI's global project 'Rice Science for a Better World.'

He will also be given a presentation on collaboration between India and IRRI and research between them as well as Gene Array and Molecular Marker Application at the Institute.

Kalam is also scheduled to visit several educational institutions like the Philippines Science High School and the Universtiy of Phillippens where he will interact students, faculty members and Filipino scientists.
