Sushma Swaraj holds several meetings in Meghalaya

Shillong: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs today held several meetings here with State Government and North Eastern Council (NEC)officials including the law enforcement agencies to assess the development and security scenario in the north eastern region.

The Committee Chairperson and leader of a seven-member team, Sushma Swaraj had a closed door meeting with NEC officials and representatives of North East MPs forum at NEC secretariat in Nongrim hills locality under tight security.

Official sources said that the discussion was on infrastructure development.

Swaraj held another meeting with state government officials and forces of the state police, Assam Rifles, BSF and CRPF to know about the development in the state, the law and order and security of the region, official sources said.

She also met the Meghalaya legislators and Chief executive member of khasi hills autonomous district council, H S Shylla, the sources added.

Meghalaya unit president of the BJP, A L Hek told media that he had met Swaraj and handed over to her a six-point memorandum.

While discussing with Swaraj, Hek told her the need for construction of a railway head at Byrnihat area in Meghalaya Ri Bhoi district. He said that by extending the railway line from Guwahati upto Byrnihat would help facilitate transportatation of goods.

Hek also impressed on the committee the need of setting up of another railway reservation counter here to cater to the ever-increasing demand for train tickets and up gradation of Umroi airport in Ri Bhoi district for daily flights.

Introduction of two new super fast trains between Guwahati and Shillong and the other between Guwahati and Chennai were also sought, Hek said.

Construction of the Shillong-bypass and flyovers to ease up the traffic congestion in the city was emphasized in the memorandum, Hek added.
