Curfew was relaxed for a few hours in Leh and Kargil today (Feb 14,2006) which had witnessed widespread violence over reports of alleged desecration of Quran at a mosque following an improvement in situation in the twin districts, officials said.
Curfew was relaxed for a four hours in entire Leh district from 9 AM this morning, the sources said adding if there was no untoward incident the relaxation would be extended further.
Senior civil and police officials of the district are monitoring the situation which has improved over the past few days, the sources said.
In Kargil, curfew was relaxed for three hours from 10.30 AM in the whole district today, Senior Superintendent of Police Danish Rana told sources.
No untoward incidents were reported during relaxation in the curfew in both the districts yesterday.
Violence erupted in the Ladakh region early last week following allegations of desecration of the Quran in Bodh Kharboo area of Kargil district on February six.
Buddhists and Muslims clashed at several places in both Leh and Kargil towns forcing the authorities to seek help of Army, ITBP and CRPF in maintaining law and order.
