BJP favours law to stop religious conversion Sunday, February 19 2006 18:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Guwahati:
The BJP today (Feb 19 2006) said it favoured a law banning religious conversion "which had assumed a dangerous proportion".
Addressing a mammoth 'Parivartan' rally here, BJP president Rajnath Singh alleged religious conversions, particularly in tribal and reserve belts, had assumed a "dangerous proportion".
"After assuming charge as BJP president, my endeavour has been to visit tribal and backward areas where conversions to Chritianity are on in full swing", Singh said.
"There should be a law to stop these conversions and we have also instructed the Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states, including Jharkand, to immediately stop such practices", Singh said in his maiden visit to the state as BJP chief.
He said BJP had no objection to the social work done by Christian missionaries but would strongly oppose religious conversions.
Lambasting the reported Indo-US nuclear deal, the BJP President alleged the country had surrendered to the US which was "unfortunate".
On the Centre's step in amending the Foreigners' Act after the scrapping of IMDT, Singh said his party would oppose it as it never supported a different law for Assam in regard to the problem of infiltration.
