Wednesday, February 22 2006 14:17 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

Ahmednagar: Expressing concern over rising incidents of farmers' suicides in Maharashtra, UPA Chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi today (Feb 22 2006) said such cases should be thoroughly investigated and priority be given to preserving farmers' rights.

"We have taken many steps to ensure that farmers' rights were safeguarded but despite that incidents of farmers' suicides are increasing," Sonia said addressing a farmers rally organised by Maharashtra Krishak Sanghatana here.

"This a matter of concern and we must look forward to solve the problems of the farmers," Sonia said.

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said from the next kharif season, the state was going to declare loans at six per cent interest, which would benefit the farmers.
