Government clarifies on CBI interfering issue
Thursday, February 23 2006 19:08 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Faced with the criticism of interfering in the functioning of CBI, the government today (Feb 23 2006) said it had only sought a 'clarification' from the investigating agency on BJP leader L K Advani's discharge in the case related to inflammatory speeches leading to the Babri Masjid demolition.

"The letter (written by officials of DoPT) only sought a clarification as to why a revision petition cannot be filed in the Supreme Court," Minister of State for Home S P Jaiswal said here.

He said "it is only a clarification. Where is the interference? We don't think this is interference," he added.

According to media reports, the government had asked CBI to explain as to why there was no action against Advani who was discharged by the Court and also sought details of "internal deliberations" on the matter.
