India to obtain energy independence by 2030: Kalam
Tuesday, February 28 2006 14:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Observing that India could attain the goal of energy independence well before 2030, President A P J Abdul Kalam today (Feb 28 2006) exhorted the country's scientists to specifically focus on research in the area of renewable energy sources.

But for this, share of power generated through renewable energy sources would have to be increased from existing 5 to 25 per cent and scientists would have to concentrate on research in areas of Carbon nano tube based solar cells, increasing bio-fuel oil content, efficient thorium-based nuclear fuel and efficient hydrogen fuel, Kalam said in his address to nation on the occasion of the National Science Day.

"Science leads to development of technologies. Availability of technologies leads to products," Kalam said encouraging scientists to make discoveries which will lead to development of new technologies and new cost effective products, thus improving the quality of life.

"It should be the mission of our young and experienced scientists to see that they make scientific discoveries, which will lay the foundation for future technologies of the country leading to new cost effective products for our billion plus people and also improving quality of life of our people," he said.

Stating that science had touched every person in all walks of life - be it rural or urban, Kalam said important ingredient for societal transformation would mainly come from science.

He also encouraged young children to take up science as career and said "If you seriously pursue science as a career, you will ensure that our future generation will see more actions of science that will make their life happy, prosperous and safe."
