Jaiprakash Yadav surrenders, in judicial custody Tuesday, February 28 2006 14:36 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Jamui (Bihar):
Former Union Minister and RJD MP from Munger Jaiprakash Narain Yadav surrendered before a local court here today (Feb 28 2006) in connection with a case charging him with helping his brother and RJD candidate in the Assembly election Vijay Prakash to escape from police custody.
Yadav, who had been evading arrest after a fresh non-bailable warrant was issued against him early this month, gave himself up before the sub-divisional judicial magistrate A K Jha this afternoon and was later remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
The magistrate turned down the prayer of Yadav's counsels Ranapratap Singh and Chitranjan Sinha for granting him bail.
Yadav's counsels also petitioned the court for sending him to a hospital as he was not keeping well, but the judge refused to entertain the prayer saying that the court would consider it on a later date.
Earlier, the Patna High Court had rejected his anticipatory bail application on February 14.
A Jamui court had issued fresh NBW against Yadav in the case charging them with causing 'illegal' escape of his brother from police custody on October 18, last year by "misusing his official position."
Prakash was arrested while moving around in the Jamui constituency during the polling with over Rs 6 lakh cash, a licensed rifle, a huge quantity of ammunition and liquor bottles.
