'Govt to face penalty if they fall to US pressure' Thursday, March 2 2006 16:52 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
CPI(M) today(Mar 2,2006) said the UPA Government would have to face the consequences if they succumb to the US pressure while clinching Indo US nuclear deal.
"If the UPA Govt succumbs to US pressure on the nuclear deal they have to face consequences. It is obvious that they have to face consequences," CPI(M) Polit Buro member Sitaram Yechury told reporters on the sidelines of an anti-Bush
protest march here.
His response came as India and US reached an understanding on the implementation of the civil nuclear cooperation agreed last year.
The CPM leader said the Left would vehemently protest and oppose any erosion of Indian interest.
"We are waiting till March 6 when India goes to IAEA meeting on the vote on Iran," Yechury said adding details of the deal were not known and as per the understanding, it was not a deal but only an agreement.
"We don't know how many reactors come under the deal or whether Fast Breed Reactors are included in this" Yechury said adding the protest against Bush had forced the Indian government to cancel US president's address in the Parliament.
"We will demand the details of the deal and then give a reaction," CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat said when asked about the nuclear deal.
