Left, Samajwadi party queries Indo-US nuke deal Friday, March 3 2006 16:07 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Questioning the Indo-US nuclear pact, Left allies and Samajwadi party today(Mar 3,2006) alleged in the Lok Sabha that India had succumbed to American 'pressure" and agreed to conditionalities which were not in the country's interest.
Accusing the Government of keeping Parliament and people in the dark over details of the nuclear deal, they demanded an immediate statement from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee said the visit of US President George W Bush was not yet over and the Prime Minister would make a statement on the issue next week in Parliament.
Raising the issue during zero hour, CPI-M leader Basudeb Acharia charged that the US has 'forced' India to come to this agreement which was to serve American interests and not that of the people of India.
Voicing apprehensions over the agreement on agriculture between the two countries, Acharia claimed that it would give an entry to multinationals in the farm sector.
His party colleague Rupchand Pal said media was giving different interpretations of the deal. In actual terms, India has been brought under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty which the country has held as discriminatory, he said.
Pal wanted to know whether Government had conveyed to Bush Parliament's resolution demanding unconditional withdrawal of the US-led troops from Iraq.
Ramji Lal Suman (SP) said the nuclear deal was not in India's favour while BJP's Santosh Gangwar also wanted an immediate statement from the Prime Minister.
