General strike cripples normal life in Manipur Saturday, March 4 2006 12:36 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
Imphal:
Normal life was affected in Manipur today(Mar 4,2006) following an 18-hour 'lightning general strike' called by several social organisations in protest against the alleged molestation of a 24-year-old woman in police custody.
Markets, shops and business establishments were closed in all the districts and transport services between Manipur and neighbouring states and within the state were also cancelled in view of the strike, official sources said.
Supporters of the strike also seized and burnt question papers of Class 12 examinations of Manipur Higher Secondary Council at many places, the sources said.
"Attendance in government offices was 'almost nil' inspite of government order that those who failed to attend duty would face disciplinary action," they said.
Reports said most of the roads in Imphal area wore a deserted look as people preferred to remain indoors in response to the strike call.
