EC understood to have optional Jaya's ineligibility
Monday, March 6 2006 15:56 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: The Election Commission is understood to have recommended disqualification of Jaya Bachchan as member of Parliament on the ground that she held an office of profit as Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corportation.

The Commission's recommendation has been forwarded to President A P J Abdul Kalam under provisions of the Constitution.

The Commission had in October last year issued notice to Bachchan, who was elected to Rajya House on a Samajwadi Party ticket, on a complaint that she was holding an office ofprofit and hence should be disqualified from Parliament. The Election Commission had acted on a reference from the office of the President following a complaint sent to him by one Madan Mohan that Bachchan was appointed Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Corporation after becoming a member of Rajya Sabha.

EC sources said that the Commission had sent its opinion last week after hearing the candidate and following due process.
