Jaya urges Kalam to refer the issue back to EC
Tuesday, March 7 2006 13:24 Hrs (IST) - World Time -

New Delhi: Facing disqualification as a member of Rajya Sabha, Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan today(Mar 7,2006) urged President A P J Abdul Kalam to refer the issue back to the Election Commission for fresh orders after hearing her.

"Wherever the matter, (it) be remitted back to the Election Commission of India to give proper hearing and for passing fresh orders after considering all materials," she said in her letter to the President.

Referring to media reports about the recommendation by the Commission that she be disqualified on the ground that she held an office of profit, Bachchan said its 'opinion' was given in the absence of the most fundamental document with regard to her appointment as Chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Film Development Board, which is lying in sealed cover under the orders of the High Court.

"The applicant (Jaya) had moved the High Court for de-sealing of record and for a copy of the said order but appropriate orders of the Court could not be obtained," she said and pointed out that the office of chairperson is admittedly not of profit and carries no remuneration or allowances.
