Left accuses Govt of bartering free foreign policy Saturday, March 11 2006 15:22 Hrs (IST) - World Time -
New Delhi:
Government came in for attack in the Lok Sabha today(Mar 11,2006) over the Indo-US civilian nuclear deal with its outside supporter Left accusing it of bartering independent foreign policy while opposition BJP charged it with limiting the country's nuclear capability.
Participating in a special discussion on the issue, CPI'sC K Chandrappan said that it was an 'unequal' treaty and one which would take India to the 'stable of U S global strategy
of containing China and Russia'.
He alleged that the Manmohan Singh Government has bartered the country's independent foreign policy for a 'little' nuclear energy and arms which would instigate an arms
race.
The CPI member said that the U S has remained silent on a seat for India on the U N Security Council while going in for the deal as it wanted an ally in New Delhi for its 'destabilising politics' of change in regimes which Washington does not like.
Claiming that the U S has destabilised 100 regimes in its backyard of South America, he wanted to know whether India agreed with the concerns expressed by the US President on Iran.
Charging the government of 'going out of its way' to befriend US and limiting the country's nuclear capability, BJP's M A K Swain suggested it was an unequal treaty and said there should not not be subordinate-superior relationship.
